Suffering from Hip Pain?
As the largest ball-and-socket joints in your body, your hips withstand a great deal of wear and tear. Those suffering from hip pain know how debilitating it can be. We want you to know that you're in good hands and our team of experts at Spencer Orthopedics is here to help you heal and recover.
Hip Anatomy
The hip joint is where the hip meets the leg and joins the trunk of the body. It comprises the femur and the pelvis (which is made up of the ischium, pubis, and ilium).
Types of Hip Injuries and Conditions
Hip pain is caused by a variety of conditions, injuries, and problems including:
- Hip Arthritis | Juvenile idiopathic arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and septic arthritis
- Hip Injuries | Bursitis (joint inflammation), Hip fracture, Hip labral tear, Inguinal hernia, sprains, tendinitis.
- Pinched Nerves | Meralgia paresthetica, Sacroiliitis, Sciatica
- Cancer | Bone Cancer and Leukemia
- Other Problems such as Avascular necrosis, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, Osteomyelitis, Osteoporosis, and Synovitis.
Process for Diagnosing and Treating Hip Injuries
A physician makes a diagnosis by considering the symptoms mentioned by the patient and assessing the positioning of the hip and leg. An X-ray will then confirm the fracture and its location. If the patient experiences pain but the X-ray doesn't show a fracture, an MRI or bone scan could be ordered to look for a hairline fracture.
Before surgery is considered, patients with hip pain might benefit from the following treatments:
- Physical Therapy
- Walking aids
- Medication
- Injection Therapy
- Stretching and Strengthening
- PRP Therapy
- EPAT
If the injury or condition is severe, and not responding to the above-mentioned treatments, the doctor might suggest surgery. Surgical interventions could include a Hip arthroscopy, which is the least invasive. Hip Reconstruction is another option which could include hip bone reshaping and fixing it into a new position, or cartilage replacements.
In some cases, hip replacement surgery might be necessary, and the team of experts at Spencer Orthopedics will replace your damaged hip with a prosthesis (artificial hip joint). Surgeons could also make use of internal screws to repair the hip or consider a partial replacement for those suffering from other health conditions or who are no longer living independently. Hip replacement surgery can be highly effective in improving patient mobility and relieving hip pain.
When Should I Call a Doctor?
It is advised to seek medical attention if you aren't able to move your leg or hip, bear weight on the affected leg, and you're experiencing intense pain and sudden swelling.
